Post 71 celebrates veterans - The Star
Dec 5, 2018
Lt. Col. Michael L. Smith, operations officer for the Cyber Protection Brigade, shared memories from his childhood onward, including thoughts of his dad's association with the American Legion."The United States has been at war for the last 17 years and now has the largest population of veterans since the Vietnam War," he said. "We have an obligation to these young men and women who answered their nation's call. Future soldiers, Marines, sailors, airmen and Coast Guard consider how veterans are taken care of as they consider serving themselves."Smith recalled how the funeral of his father, a Marine Corps veteran who died unexpectedly and at a relatively early age on Dec. 28, 2006, was handled with profound respect, discipline and warmth by American Legion members in western Pennsylvania. "Veterans help connect the public with the military and inspire the next generation to serve. When these veterans return to their communities, they bring home attributes needed for military service, to make them great leaders, professionals and citizens."Unfortunately, many veterans today find themselves homeless, jobless and in many cases, suffering from mental-health issues, with a suicide rate of 20-plus veterans daily nationwide."He encouraged his listeners to "make the connection," involving themselves with veterans, and acknowledged that American Legion members and boosters are at the forefront of such efforts, whether through encouraging the hiring of veterans or through the simple expression of thanks to those who have served. "Continue to find them. Encourage them to join their American Legion family. Continue to be a beacon of hope for all area veterans and their families for years to come," Smith said.Post 71's event is normally held in Wade Hampton Veterans Park, on Georgia Avenue, but this year's gathering was held in the group's headquarters, due to the threat of rainy, cool conditions. Fox Creek High School's band and chorus were on board for the gathering, setting the event to music, as did a joint choir (...
